The ball is in your court
I enjoy watching tennis. A childhood fascination that started with seeing Björn Borg on our scratchy Philips B&W has lasted a lifetime. Lately, I find myself returning to tennis as a metaphor for a topic I speak about quite often - transformation.
Meaningful transformation never comes easy and how you react to obstacles will determine if you succeed or fail. In its relentless scoring rhythm from love to game point, from set to match, tennis values every movement on the court. Doubles aside, it’s just you and your opponent, each challenged to be graceful or perfect, awkward or clumsy, with one goal - to play the ball forward. With no one to blame and nowhere to hide you have to focus and dedicate to a response when the ball is in your court. Your opponent might be intimidating but you play all the same.
Bring this mindset to your business or personal transformation journey. When questions and choices are played your way, chase them down with decisions and actions. Don’t delay, waffle, hide, or quit the moment. This is the only way for a shot at winning or creating an upset.
Remember that it is not the best players who play the ball forward but the players who play the ball forward that become the best.
